Luxembourg-Portugal Trip (Part 2): Family Gathering sama Keluarga Marcio

Like seriously!

So, walapun merantau di negeri orang, tapi Portugis tetap jadi bahasa ibunya, (2) Luxembourgish, of course karena dy tinggal disana. Menurut Marcio, bahasanya rada mix Jerman Inggris, but well, menurutku gak kedengeran Inggris2nya.

Setiap liat aku, ibunya bilang, aduh cantik banget. OMG! huahahha, sampe susah berkata2 dengernya hehhehe. Lanjut lagi, kita makan bareng di restoran gitu. Aku selipin fotonya ya.

Instagram caption: First dinner in Luxembourg ❤️ A very proper (by that I mean eating on table) and nice dinner after 20hrs trip from Jakarta to Luxembourg. I finally met Marcio’s mom, brother, sister and in laws. You really have no idea how excited and happy I was to meet them because for 2 years I heard so many stories about them from Marcio yet havent got chance to meet them until today.
And actually the most interesting thing that amazed me during this family dinner was how people constantly used, the ones I learned yeaaarrrss ago when I was in college, code mixing and code switching FOR REAL! Marcio and his family speak a lot of languages in one conversation and they mix and switch those languages in the conversation so casually and fluently. They speak Portuguese, Luxembourgish, French, German, English, and understand Italian, Spanish, Dutch and others (oh God!). Marcio speaks Portuguese with his parents. At this time, we had his mom so he spoke Portuguese with her (I wrote more about them in my latest post). Marcio speaks French with his siblings (his brother, sister and in laws). That was quite a challenge for me to understand, especially because they spoke oh so FAST! I could only catch one or two words and try to connect them with the context of conversation, and it puzzled me all the time. Such a puzzle! But they were so kind that they switched language to English for me so then I could understand. Then at that time, I could talk a lot more and HAPPIER because finally I could say everything I had in mind! Duuuh, that was literally when speaking English felt like soooo easy. Can we keep speaking English, pls? But ya, No! Lol… Marcio speaks Luxembourgish with his niece. Huwaaaa, and at this time, I spoke English (of course!) with her. She is a smart 6 years old kid, so we managed to understand each other, either with gesture or facial expression. Kid is the best!
But yes, dinner was totally great! I had so much fun and learned a lot at the same time. And yaaa, I had the tastiest food that I enjoyed so much. They said that it’s Portuguese type of food, well.. perfect then! I will have no problem at all 🙂

Pertemuan pertama berjalan dengan luancaaar. Aku suka makanannya, enak2 parah! Nanti lah di tulisan berikutnya aku ceritain. Sekarang aku mau tulisin kesanku sama keluarga Marcio. Ibunya baik banget ya ampun. Seriusan, selama di sana, Ibunya masakin, bantuin nyuciin baju2 kami, beliin buah atau makanan yang kami mau, trus berusaha banget bikin kami nyaman. Ibunya seneng banget kalo aku sama Marcio lagi males2an nonton TV berdua, pasti deh diselimutin dan dy bilang “seneng x liat kalian berdua” hahahha.

Instagram caption: Maman ❤️ So, interesting thing about Alice Perreira Marques, Marcio’s Mom, is about the language. She cannot speak English but she can speak a little French with accent, and for a newbie like me who never really exposed with a lot of accents, IT WAS HARD to understand. Yet, we never gave up trying to talk to each other.
Marcio speaks Portuguese with his Mom. And yes I didnt understand a word (but I laughed whenever they laughed, Idk why! Lol). He would translate it to English to me, so then I could engage in their conversation. The hardest thing was always when the translator was not around. Like yesterday, we went to groceries to buy stuff and Marcio went to different aisle, leaving me with his mom. And then we started the small chitchat in French talking things like “Vous aimez (naming stuff)?” and followed by stuttered me saying “oui” or “non” with a brief reason why I like or dislike that stuff IN FRENCH. Lol! And I continued asking the same, and she responded with Idk whether French or Portuguese. Or mostly we talked about weather, because I knew French terminologies for that lol! And yes when I spoke French, I didnt really focus on using “vous” or “tu”, I would use whichever matched the verb that I remembered. And I think she did the same!
Yesterday morning, she wanted to teach me how to make Marcio’s favorite cake. We were in the kitchen when she showed me the recipe, it was in Portuguese! Marcio was out buying eggs, so no one could save me. She talked about stuff, maybe in French (or in Portuguese? Again, idk!). She instructed me to do stuff and I was kinda lost and ended up hugging her and said “Je comprends pas! Desoleee” (I dont understand, I am sorry) with a little tears.
And this morning, we were in the kitchen when suddenly she said I could call her “Maman” which means mom, because she said (based on Marcio’s translation) “Marcio’s Mom is my mom also”. Owh, that’s kinda sweet! Actually before, I didnt know the proper way to address her (Marcio said I could just call her by her name which I explained to him that it’s considered impolite in my culture calling older people with their names). So yes, that works for me! 🙂

Kakak2nya. Kakaknya yang cowok ya ampun simpatik banget. Marcio versi yang cool dan serius. Huwah! Kerenlah orangnya. Kakaknya cewek ramah banget, banyak ngobrolnya, aku sukaaa!

Instagram caption: Being Vera’s sous chef yesterday.
We made Marcio’s favorite bolognese that he never found any tastier than this in Jakarta. He always ALWAYS talked about his sister bolognese whenever we ate one in Jakarta. Ohya, not only once or twice he complained about western food that was not even close to the taste that he really wanted. So when we planned to go Luxembourg, Vera’s bolognese was absolutely one of the food in the list that we craved to taste.
Funny story about this bolognese, one time I wanted to cook something good for Marcio that I texted Vera how to make his favorite Bolognese. She literally made it (at her home) and made video of the process then sent me the video. I tried to copy with a lil bit modification (which happened to be a lot, at the end!) due to limited ingredients we had in Jakarta. Then when I finished it and asked Marcio to taste, he said “uuhhhmmm…Bi, this is really good. But not like Vera’s”. And I think you can guess what happened next, the drama queen was mad and crying like a baby! Lol!
So yesterday we took train to Schifflange and went to Vera and Marco’s place. Theeen, we cooked her bolognese masterpiece. It tasted soooo good. She was absolutely generous with meat, we had a lot of meat in the sauce (thing that I took a note!). So ya, Marcio was super happy for finally having his favorite bolognese of all time 🙂 P.s: I wore Futebol Clube do Porto apron. Yuhuuu!

Nadine orangnya ramah, sangat menyenangkan. Dy kesel banget wktu tau kalo aku suka nyuapin Marcio, which is kalo di kita kayaknya biasa aja sih hal kaya gini. Sayangnya dy ga terlalu lancar bahasa Inggris, jadi masih sering dibantu terjemahin.

Overall, I have the best time in Luxembourg sama keluarganya Marcio. They welcomed me so warmly, like a part of family. Walaupun kami baru pertama ketemu, tapi udah kerasa deketnya. Fyuuh, thanks all for the effort! I had a great time with the family in Lux 🙂
